Over 90 percent of Iran’s pistachios are exported, said a member of the Parliament’s Plan and Budget Committee.

Shahbaz Hassanpour Biglari told Iran Daily that the recent hike in foreign exchange rate has made Iran’s pistachio export more profitable and has encouraged exporters to get involved in the business.

Thanks to the efforts of Iranian traders, pistachios have gained the biggest share in the global market, he added pointing out that the valuable crop is well-known as an example of high quality Iranian products.

The MP said more than 250,000 tons of pistachios were produced in the country in the year to March 2018, of which 80 percent came from Kerman Province.

Biglari, who represents Sirjan in the Parliament, underlined that the quality of pistachios cultivated in Kerman, Sirjan and Rafsanjan in Kerman Province are the best in Iran and the world.

“Drought and water shortage are expected to bring about a decline in pistachio production to below 100,000 tons in the year ending March 2019.

“While the increase in foreign exchange rate helped prevent a significant decline in the value of export, a reduction in Iran’s pistachios production may cause the country to lose its customers in international markets.”

Referring to the high significance of brand making in export-oriented products, he said, “If we fail to make pistachio production a profit making industry, such an approach might not be able to achieve its objectives.”

The MP said Iran’s pistachios have failed to actual price due to their sale under various names in international markets.

Biglari said making failure and strategic mistakes in brand making is plausible until suitable infrastructural facilities are available for the production sector.

“We are facing packaging problems in all agro products and this has played a key role in the neglect for the quality of Iranian crops in the world,” he said, reiterating that effective steps have been taken in to meet global standards in packaging in the recent years.

Calling for the direct supervision of the government in processing export-oriented products, he said efforts should be made to prevent the export of low-quality goods since this harms the good reputation Iranian brands.
